Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our sunglasses, prescriptions, and ordering process

Prescriptions

How do I submit my prescription?

You can submit your prescription during checkout or after your order.

During checkout, you can upload a photo or PDF of your prescription or enter the values manually via a form during checkout.

Or you can also submit it later after placing your order, via email or our prescription submission page.

Contact us at any time if you need help submitting your prescription!

What information do I need from my prescription?

You'll need the Sphere (SPH), Cylinder (CYL), and Axis values for each eye, plus your Pupillary Distance (PD). You can find all of this on your prescription from your eye doctor.

How old can my prescription be?

Most states require prescriptions to be less than 2 years old. We recommend getting an updated prescription if yours is older than 1 year to ensure the best vision correction.

What's a Pupillary Distance (PD)?

PD is the distance between the centers of your pupils, measured in millimeters. It's essential for centering your lenses correctly. Most adults have a PD between 54-74mm. Your eye doctor can measure this, or you can measure it yourself with a ruler and mirror.

Do you accept progressive or bifocal prescriptions?

Currently we offer single vision lenses only. We don't support progressive, bifocal, or multifocal prescriptions at this time, but we're exploring options for the future.

Can I order without a prescription?

Yes! You can order any of our frames with non-prescription (plano) lenses. Just select the non-prescription option during checkout and you'll still get the same great Puffy Shift adaptive lenses without vision correction.

Can I use my contacts prescription?

No, a contacts prescription is different from a glasses prescription. The values are calculated differently because contacts sit directly on your eye while glasses sit further away. You'll need a glasses-specific prescription from your eye doctor.

Ordering

How long does it take for my sunglasses to ship?

Most orders ship within 7-10 business days. Prescription lenses are custom-made for you, which takes a bit longer than non-prescription eyewear. You'll receive tracking information as soon as your order ships.

Can I customize my lenses?

Every pair comes with Puffy Shift adaptive polarized lenses at no extra cost. If your prescription is strong, you can add high-index 1.67 lenses for +$49 to get thinner, lighter lenses.

What's included with my order?

Every pair includes prescription, polarized, adaptive Puffy Shift lenses, a protective tri-fold hard case shaped like a tent, a soft zippered protective pouch shaped like a sleeping bag, and a UV-protective neck gaiter to go along with your new sunglasses!

Can I order replacement lenses for my existing frames?

We don't offer replacement lenses for other brands' frames at this time. Our lenses are custom-cut specifically for Puffy Sun frames to ensure the best fit and optical quality.

How much do Puffy Sun glasses cost?

$199 includes polarized photochromic lenses, your prescription if you have one, with free shipping.

There are two optional upgrades available: Puffy Shift Gear lenses, which are more adaptive and go darker in bright conditions (+$49), and thinner lenses for stronger prescriptions (+$49)

What makes Puffy Sun different from other brands?

Sunglass brands treat prescription as an afterthought, outsource it, and price it as an upgrade on top of an already expensive pair.

Most sunglasses have fixed tint which means constantly taking them on and off as lighting changes. Normal polarized lenses don't adapt. Normal photochromic aren't polarized. Getting both in the same lens is rare, let alone prescription. Expect this combination to cost $400 to $600 elsewhere.

There's also a whole tier of cheap sunglasses that use low-grade polarization film (TAC) that flattens color and dulls the world, making everything too dark to see.

Puffy Sun combines polarization, photochromic, and prescription into one pair, all for $199. We only use premium lens materials. Our lenses adapt to light automatically, so you can wear them all day, indoors and out, without having to switch.

Sunglasses

What lens types do you offer?

We offer single vision prescription lenses in three options: Lightshift Clear (non-polarized, goes completely clear), Lightshift (polarized, stays tinted all day), and Lightshift Gear (high-performance polarized with car activation). All are made with impact-resistant materials and 100% UV protection. Lightshift Clear and Lightshift adapt to changing light conditions so one pair works all day.

What are Puffy Shift lenses?

Puffy Shift lenses are adaptive polarized lenses included with every pair. They combine photochromic technology with 97%+ polarization and adjust tint automatically as conditions change, from bright sun to shade to indoors. One pair works all day without switching.

Should I get high-index lenses?

High-index lenses are thinner and lighter than standard lenses. We recommend them if your prescription is above +/-4.00 SPH, as they'll be more comfortable and look better in the frame. For lower prescriptions, standard lenses work great.

Are your lenses UV protected?

Yes! All our lenses provide 100% UV protection, blocking both UVA and UVB rays. This protects your eyes from sun damage while you enjoy the outdoors.

Are your lenses impact-resistant?

Yes. All our lenses are made with impact-resistant polycarbonate, which is lightweight and durable enough for hiking, biking, and everyday adventures. They meet ANSI Z80.3 standards for non-prescription and prescription sun lenses.

How dark do your lenses get?

Puffy Shift lenses have a visible light transmission (VLT) range of 9%–50%. In full sun, they reach 9% VLT — similar to a Category 3 or 4 sunglass lens, which is dark enough for driving, beach days, and high-glare conditions. In low light or indoors, they open up to 50% VLT so you can still see clearly.

Should I get Lightshift Clear, Lightshift, or Lightshift Gear?

Lightshift Clear is for everyday all-day wear—it goes completely clear indoors so you don't have to switch glasses. Lightshift is our standard adaptive polarized lens for everyday use, commuting, and outdoor activities—great if you're comfortable with tinted lenses all day. Lightshift Gear is tuned for high-performance environments: skiing, cycling, trail running, and other situations where fast light changes and enhanced contrast matter most. If you spend a lot of time indoors and want one pair for everything, Clear is ideal. If you prefer tinted lenses all day, standard Lightshift has you covered. If you're in intense outdoor conditions, Gear is worth the upgrade.

What tint colors are available for Lightshift Clear?

Lightshift Clear comes in 6 tint colors: Gray, Brown, Green, Light Blue, Purple, and Pink. All colors have the same photochromic behavior—they go from fully clear indoors to dark in bright sunlight. The color choice is purely aesthetic and personal preference. Pick whichever color appeals to you!

Can I wear my sunglasses in high altitude or snow environments?

Yes. Puffy Shift lenses perform well at altitude and on snow. UV radiation increases significantly at elevation and reflects strongly off snow, and Puffy Shift lenses darken quickly in response to both UV and visible light — reaching their darkest tint in intense conditions. They also provide 100% UVA/UVB protection. For skiing or snowboarding, Puffy Shift Gear may be worth considering for enhanced contrast and faster light adaptation.

Can I wear my sunglasses indoors?

You can. Puffy Shift lenses lighten significantly indoors, reaching up to 50% VLT in low light. They won't be as clear as regular glasses, but many people wear them comfortably throughout the day. If you spend a lot of time indoors, just keep in mind they'll have a slight tint in bright indoor environments.

Can I wear my sunglasses while driving?

Yes. Puffy Shift lenses are built on Transitions Drivewear technology, which is designed specifically for driving. Unlike standard photochromic lenses that don't activate behind a windshield, Puffy Shift lenses respond to both UV and visible light — so they adapt inside a car. They reduce glare, enhance contrast on the road, and adjust as you move between bright sun, shade, and tunnels.

Payment & Insurance

Do you accept insurance or HSA / FSA?

We provide an itemized receipt you can submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards are accepted at checkout.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes! Prescription sunglasses are an eligible expense for both HSA and FSA accounts. You can use your HSA/FSA debit card directly at checkout.

Do you accept vision insurance?

We're an out-of-network provider for most vision insurance plans. After your purchase, we provide an itemized receipt that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Many customers get a portion of their order covered this way.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, we offer flexible payment options through Shop Pay Installments at checkout, so you can split your purchase into interest-free payments.

Care

How do I clean my lenses?

Rinse your lenses under lukewarm water to remove dust and debris, then gently clean with the included microfiber cloth. Avoid paper towels, tissues, or clothing because they can scratch the lens coating. For a deeper clean, use a small drop of dish soap before rinsing.
